In 1951, the organizers of the 24 Hours of Le Mans invited upstart sports car manufacturer Porsche to become the first German carmaker to enter the French endurance classic after World War II. Porsche responded by sending a pair of its 356 coupes in lightweight, aerodynamic coachwork (known as the 356SL) to contest the race's Sport 1.1-liter category. Though producing only 46 horsepower, the slippery 356SL was still capable of reaching 100 miles per hour on the Mulsanne Straight, and more importantly, it was reliable...a potent combination that yielded Porsche's first-ever class win at Le Mans in its debut appearance.
A car of incalculable historical significance, the Porsche 356SL 1951 Le Mans S 1.1 class winner is now offered as a beautifully detailed 1:18s scale model car by Spark. Its lustrous silver coachwork is accented by fine details such as intricate mesh headlamp guards, delicate PORSCHE badging, and charming wide-rim steering wheel. Collectors of historic racing Porsches in 1:18 scale should not miss their opportunity to add this important piece to their fleet.
