The 2023 running of the 24 Hours of Le Mans featured a typical assortment of prototype and GT racers...and one big, loud interloper from the world of NASCAR. Running under the endurance classic's "Garage 56" provision for experimental racing technologies, Hendrick Motorsports entered a NASCAR Cup Series Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 that had been lightened and modified for twice-round-the-clock road racing duty with carbon brakes and a larger fuel tank. With an all-star roster of drivers (Jimmie Johnson, Jenson Button and Mike Rockenfeller) and under the supervision of legendary NASCAR crew chief Chad Knaus, the Garage 56 Camaro project was more than just a lark for team owner Rick Hendrick...much more. Constructed and run to Hendrick's extreme standards of professionalism, the G56 Camaro was a legitimate contender, posting lap times faster than most of the race's GTE-category cars while giving the prototypes something to think about on the straightaways. The Camaro's greatest impact, however, was with the local French fans, who came to love the sight and sound of the brutal NASCAR racer pounding it out on their beloved Sarthe Circuit. Finishing a highly credible 39th place overall, the Hendrick Motorsports Garage 56 Camaro firmly stamped its place in Le Mans history.
