Bolstered by the success of their new 550A RS Spyder in the preceding year's Targa Florio, Porsche arrived at Le Mans in 1957 with a pair of the nimble roadsters set to contest the S-1500 category, with another three cars fielded by private entries. In a race marked by attrition, the class would be won by American privateer Ed Hugus and Dutch co-driver Carel Godin de Beaufort in their 550A RS Spyder, taking a highly credible eighth place overall against a field of big-displacement Jaguars, Ferraris and Maseratis.
The historic Ed Hugus 550A is now commemorated by a beautifully detailed 1:43-scale resin replica by Tecnomodel. Resplendent in the traditional white-with-blue-stripes American national livery, it features highly accurate trim (including impossibly delicate badging, bonnet straps and chassis lighting) and a gorgeous cockpit with matching tonneau cover. Production is limited to eighty units worldwide.
