After its first three years in production, the Chevrolet Corvette was viewed with derision in the sports car world, perceived as being all style and no substance. With an eye on racing at the highest international levels, General Motors hired veteran driver and engineer John Fitch to spearhead their efforts to turn the Corvette into a winner. Bringing a level of professionalism he had honed racing for the likes of Mercedes and Cunningham to the factory Chevy team, Fitch turned the boulevardier Corvette into a formidable weapon on the track. In the car's race debut at the 1956 Twelve Hours of Sebring, Fitch and co-driver Walt Hansgen would score an impressive class win and 9th-place overall finish against one of the strongest fields of cars and drivers ever assembled to that point in history. Though GM's withdrawal from all racing several years later would put a (temporary) end to the Corvette competition program, their performance at Sebring in 1956 would sew the seeds of future glory for "America's Sports Car."
New from Spark Models is a beautifully detailed, limited edition 1:43-scale resin replica of the Fitch/Hansgen Corvette C1 that performed so admirably in the 1956 Sebring 12 Hours. Wearing its signature "official" American racing colors of white with blue stripes, this model features an incredibly accurate cockpit and Halibrand-style racing wheels, and comes mounted on an individually numbered display base. For fans of Corvette racing history, the new 1956 Sebring class winner from Spark is an absolutely essential addition to any serious collection of the marque.
