Though not developed with racing in mind, the Porsche 911 nonetheless became a favorite of GT category privateers in international endurance racing almost from the moment it debuted, and with the introduction of the higher-performance 911S variant in 1967, the model's fate as THE choice of independent GT racing teams was sealed. At the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans, four of the new 911S took the grid, with the #42 Sonauto entry taking the 2-liter GT class win and placing a very respectable 14th place overall in the hands of drivers Robert Buchet and Herbert Linge.
