Although Audi's all-wheel-drive Quattro Turbo completely rewrote the formula for winning grueling World Rally Championship events, by 1984 purpose-built rally cars from Peugeot and Lancia had caught up and surpassed the once-revolutionary (but road car-based) Quattro. To stay competitive in the wild world of Group B rallying, Audi needed something new. Enter the Sport Quattro, a short-wheelbase version of the Quattro designed from the ground up for rallying, with an upgraded inline-5 and a seriously bad attitude. To satisfy Group B's homologation requirements, a series of 200 road versions of the Sport Quattro were planned, though only 164 were completed before the lethally dangerous Group B category was cancelled.
